At Elbe Akustik we work with three of the world's leading hearing aid manufacturers: Phonak (Switzerland), Signia (Germany) and Oticon (Denmark). Each brand has its own philosophy and particular strengths. Which suits you best depends on your lifestyle, your needs and your hearing goals.

In this article I compare the three brands objectively and offer some guidance for your decision.

Phonak: the connectivity champion

Phonak, part of the Swiss Sonova group, is known for excellent connectivity and innovative communication solutions.

Phonak's strengths

• Universal Bluetooth: Phonak hearing aids connect to practically any Bluetooth-capable device, Android, iPhone, laptops, tablets. No intermediate device required
• Roger technology: the flagship for difficult listening situations. A small microphone (Roger On or Roger Pen) is placed next to the speaker and transmits the signal directly into the hearing aid. Ideal for meetings, lectures and restaurants
• AutoSense OS: AI-based automatic programme adjustment recognising over 200 listening situations
• Robust build: Phonak devices have a reputation for durability and weather resistance

Signia: the sound perfectionist

Signia (formerly Siemens) is a German company with a long tradition and a focus on natural sound.

• Own Voice Processing (OVP): Signia recognises your own voice and processes it separately from ambient sound. The result: your voice sounds natural while the environment is optimally adjusted
• Augmented Xperience (AX): two independent processors handle speech and environment separately, then mix them together. A unique approach
• Signia Assistant: an AI-supported fine-tuning assistant built into the app. You describe a problem and the assistant proposes adjustments
• CROS/BiCROS: very good solutions for single-sided deafness
• Design: Signia offers particularly elegant and discreet models

Oticon: the brain's advocate

Oticon of Denmark takes a neuroscientific approach with its "BrainHearing" concept: the focus is not the ear but the brain.

Oticon's strengths

• BrainHearing: Oticon's philosophy rests on the insight that we hear with the brain, not with the ears. The technology delivers the brain as complete a sound picture as possible so it can filter out the relevant signals itself
• Open Sound Navigator: rather than suppressing every sound except speech, Oticon deliberately keeps the soundscape open. The brain gets access to all sounds and can orient itself naturally
• Deep Neural Network (DNN): trained on 12 million real sound scenes, Oticon's AI delivers extremely realistic sound reproduction
• Tinnitus SoundSupport: extensive tinnitus features with ocean sounds and individually adjustable tones
• EduMic: a dedicated solution for school and training

Why the personal fitting is what decides
