Hearing Protection in Everyday Life

By Elbe Akustik · approx. 2 min read · April 16, 2026

Why Hearing Protection Is So Important

Our hearing is more sensitive than most people think. Sustained noise levels as low as 85 decibels (dB) can damage the inner ear. For comparison: a normal conversation is about 60 dB, a busy street is 80 dB, and a rock concert is 100–115 dB.

The catch: noise damage to the inner ear is irreversible. Once damaged, hair cells do not regenerate. Prevention is therefore the best protection.

Types of Hearing Protection

1. Standard Earplugs

Inexpensive disposable or reusable foam plugs. Reduce all frequencies evenly by approx. 20–30 dB. Good for DIY work, mowing, and general noise protection.

2. Musician's Hearing Protection

Special filters reduce sound evenly across all frequencies: music sounds quieter but not distorted. Ideal for concertgoers, musicians, and DJs. Custom-molded ear pieces offer the best comfort.

3. Occupational Ear Muffs

Large cups over the ears provide maximum reduction (25–35 dB). Required for many industrial workplaces. Also available with built-in radio or Bluetooth.

4. Custom-Made Hearing Protection

Custom-made silicone ear molds that fit your ear canal perfectly. Various filter options for different applications. The most comfortable and effective solution.

Everyday Tips

  • Concerts and clubs: Always wear hearing protection: musician filters work well
  • Headphones: The 60/60 rule: maximum 60% volume for maximum 60 minutes at a time
  • DIY work: Always use hearing protection with drills, circular saws, etc.
  • Sports: Swimming ear protection prevents infections and protects the eardrum
  • Children: Children's ears are particularly sensitive: use ear muffs for fireworks and loud events
